Antionette H. Jones is a writer driven by a sincere desire to connect with young people through storytelling. After more than a decade in education, she made the difficult decision to become a children’s author at the age of 49. It has changed her perspective.

Becoming an author at this stage in her life has opened Antionette’s mind to new possibilities and offered her the opportunity to inspire others. It is important to Antoinette to share life's possibilities with others - especially children. Drawing from her personal story and interactions, she wrote the book, “The Independents”.

As she'd hoped, the story has resonated deeply with its audience, offering connection, laughter, and thought-provoking insights into the human experience. Through her writings and life experiences, Antionette hopes to inspire and uplift young hearts, reminding them that they are never alone in their journey.

Her journey as a storyteller is one of resilience, transition, and unwavering dedication to the transformative power of literature.

00:00:23.679 --> 00:00:27.679
Hello, everyone, welcome to today's Word of Mom Radio. Here

9
00:00:27.800 --> 00:00:30.679
on the Word of Mom Media Network. I'm your host,

10
00:00:31.039 --> 00:00:34.119
dor Di Carlo, and you know we are here week

11
00:00:34.200 --> 00:00:38.520
after week, show after show, breaking those myths that morepreneurs

12
00:00:38.560 --> 00:00:42.439
and businesswomen, especially those of us building our businesses from home,

13
00:00:42.759 --> 00:00:45.399
that we're just dabbling in between bake sales and getting

14
00:00:45.399 --> 00:00:46.359
our nails done.

15
00:00:46.679 --> 00:00:47.000
We're not.

16
00:00:47.719 --> 00:00:50.439
We are smart, we are savvy, and we are sharing

17
00:00:50.479 --> 00:00:53.640
the wisdom of women in business and in life. And

18
00:00:53.719 --> 00:00:57.679
I'm looking forward to bringing today's guest into our children's authors.

19
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:02.200
Ali antoinette H Jones is a writer driven by a

20
00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:06.840
sincere desire to connect with young people through storytelling. After

21
00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:10.079
more than a decade in education, she made the difficult

22
00:01:10.079 --> 00:01:12.560
decision to become a children's author at the age of

23
00:01:12.599 --> 00:01:17.079
forty nine. It has changed her perspective. Becoming an author

24
00:01:17.159 --> 00:01:20.359
at that stage of her life has opened Antoinette's mind

25
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:25.640
to new possibilities and offered her the opportunity to inspire others.

26
00:01:25.959 --> 00:01:29.879
It's important to Antoinette to share life's possibilities with others,

27
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:35.760
especially children. Drawing from her personal story and interactions, she

28
00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:39.799
wrote the book The Independence As she hoped the story

29
00:01:39.840 --> 00:01:44.480
has resonated deeply with its audience, offering connection, laughter, and

30
00:01:44.599 --> 00:01:49.239
thought provoking insights into the human experience. Through her writing

31
00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:54.560
and life experiences, Antoinette hopes to inspire and uplift young hearts,

32
00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:57.920
reminding them that they are never alone in their journey.

33
00:01:58.519 --> 00:02:01.760
Her journey is a storyteller is one of resilience, transition,

34
00:02:02.280 --> 00:02:07.439
and unwavering dedication to the transformative power of literature. And

35
00:02:07.519 --> 00:02:10.159
with all that being said, I could continue on, but

36
00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:13.400
instead I'd rather welcome you in so Anjoinette. Welcome to

37
00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:17.240
Word of Mom Radio. Thank you, Joe, you are very welcome.

38
00:02:17.400 --> 00:02:19.439
I would love for you to take us on your

39
00:02:19.520 --> 00:02:23.360
journey through education and everything that led you to becoming

40
00:02:23.400 --> 00:02:24.319
a children's author.

41
00:02:24.800 --> 00:02:27.039
Absolutely, it's a long journey.

42
00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:30.759
I can skip some chapters because I started writing as

43
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:33.879
a teenager, so it was very early on that I

44
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:39.800
learned to love the writing process. But life happened, and

45
00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:43.280
I didn't get encouragement along the way about writing, so

46
00:02:43.800 --> 00:02:45.599
I gave that up and decided I was going to

47
00:02:45.680 --> 00:02:49.199
follow the money. And life happened again, and it was like, okay,

48
00:02:49.240 --> 00:02:51.080
so you got to follow the kids and what do

49
00:02:51.159 --> 00:02:54.360
they need and what's best for their family? And life

50
00:02:54.439 --> 00:02:59.080
happened again, and I decided that I had to figure

51
00:02:59.080 --> 00:03:01.560
out what was going to be best for me. I

52
00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:06.280
lost both my parents in a three year span, and

53
00:03:06.360 --> 00:03:09.080
that caused me to think really hard about, Okay, so

54
00:03:09.319 --> 00:03:12.000
you don't know when your last day will be. If

55
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:15.159
it's today, are you happy with what you did yesterday?

56
00:03:16.039 --> 00:03:18.639
And this book that had been sitting on my heart

57
00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:23.120
for five years was like I'm ready, I'm ready, do me,

58
00:03:23.319 --> 00:03:26.840
pick me, and that's what I decided to do.

59
00:03:26.919 --> 00:03:28.759
I was like, okay. I had to talk with.

60
00:03:28.680 --> 00:03:30.639
My husband and I was like, I really feel like

61
00:03:31.240 --> 00:03:33.599
this is the time, and he was very encouraging with

62
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:35.439
saying do it.

63
00:03:35.759 --> 00:03:36.360
So I did.

64
00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:40.159
I love that and I really do, because you know what,

65
00:03:41.080 --> 00:03:44.520
very often we talk ourselves out of our dreams, not

66
00:03:44.639 --> 00:03:48.000
talk ourselves into them. More and more and it's so

67
00:03:48.159 --> 00:03:50.159
important and I think it's part of why we do

68
00:03:50.199 --> 00:03:52.479
what we do here at Ord of Mom Radio to

69
00:03:52.680 --> 00:03:56.680
really encourage women to never give up because you are

70
00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:01.560
never too young, too old. Whatever time you start, guess what,

71
00:04:02.039 --> 00:04:03.319
that was the perfect time.

72
00:04:03.639 --> 00:04:06.280
Absolutely, and that's what I have learned. Absolutely.

73
00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:10.800
So for you, what are the central themes and messages

74
00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:14.599
in your book that you want people to take away

75
00:04:14.680 --> 00:04:16.160
when they need the independence.

76
00:04:17.519 --> 00:04:21.120
I really want people to take away the fact that

77
00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:24.240
you're not alone in the world. You think you are alone.

78
00:04:24.279 --> 00:04:27.079
The experiences that you're having are so personal. It feels

79
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:29.879
like what you're going through is just you and nobody

80
00:04:29.879 --> 00:04:33.360
could understand it. But by reading the characters, I hope

81
00:04:33.399 --> 00:04:36.040
that they will see a little bit of themselves. I've

82
00:04:36.040 --> 00:04:40.040
heard they see themselves, they see friends, they see people

83
00:04:40.079 --> 00:04:43.399
they know, and that makes them feel more connected in

84
00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:45.800
the world, like, oh, like somebody else went through this.

85
00:04:45.959 --> 00:04:46.759
It wasn't just me.

86
00:04:46.839 --> 00:04:49.959
Somebody else is feeling these things, and that makes me

87
00:04:50.120 --> 00:04:52.759
feel like I'm not alone in this world, because being

88
00:04:52.839 --> 00:04:57.160
alone is really hard and experiencing things that are hard

89
00:04:57.240 --> 00:05:00.240
and feeling alone makes them a lot tougher. If you

90
00:05:00.279 --> 00:05:03.079
feel like it's not just me, it's happening to other

91
00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:06.120
people around the world, it makes it a little more palatable.

92
00:05:06.160 --> 00:05:08.439
You can say, Okay, I can get through this.

93
00:05:08.519 --> 00:05:10.639
I read a story where somebody else went through something

94
00:05:10.720 --> 00:05:13.120
similar and they went through it and they were okay.

95
00:05:13.199 --> 00:05:15.199
And that's what I want people to really get when

96
00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:16.199
they read my story.

97
00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:20.240
I found it interesting because each of your characters, you know,

98
00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:22.360
you look at Chris and Avery, and you know, all

99
00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:25.720
of the different characters, each has their own challenge that

100
00:05:25.879 --> 00:05:31.240
they are trying to live with and cope with, whether

101
00:05:31.279 --> 00:05:33.920
it's the death of a parent, the parents being deployed,

102
00:05:34.199 --> 00:05:36.839
you know, or all of the different things that are

103
00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:40.759
going on. And I don't think the feeling of being

104
00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:45.040
alone is limited at any age. Nope, because I think

105
00:05:46.279 --> 00:05:51.720
parents' kids, everybody, when they're facing challenges, feel like no

106
00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:53.879
one else can understand what's going on here.

107
00:05:54.519 --> 00:05:55.959
I agree. I agree.

108
00:05:56.040 --> 00:06:01.279
I worked with students from the very beginning in pre

109
00:06:01.399 --> 00:06:04.279
k all the way up to students in law school

110
00:06:04.279 --> 00:06:07.839
and graduate school, and so the thing that was a

111
00:06:07.879 --> 00:06:11.319
common thread in every school I worked in was that

112
00:06:11.399 --> 00:06:16.759
feeling of being disconnected until they found their group, until

113
00:06:16.800 --> 00:06:19.519
they found a connection with someone else at school and

114
00:06:19.639 --> 00:06:22.680
someone in the office with a joining a club or

115
00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:25.160
something like that. That feeling of loan when they first

116
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:27.800
start out, no matter what age they were, once they

117
00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:30.720
found that connection, their whole world opened up.

118
00:06:31.560 --> 00:06:34.560
It's amazing how that happens. And part of the big

119
00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:39.000
thing and theme of this book is the resilience and

120
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:44.120
the transition that everybody keeps going through throughout this. So

121
00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:52.279
how have your personal experiences, Antoinette influenced how you portrayed

122
00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:54.480
these kind of themes in your book.

123
00:06:56.160 --> 00:06:57.680
Well, part of them are personal.

124
00:06:59.040 --> 00:07:02.519
So like one of the characters Avery in my book,

125
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:06.639
I was moved from living in the city to move

126
00:07:06.759 --> 00:07:11.600
to the suburbs, and that was traumatic for me at

127
00:07:11.639 --> 00:07:14.720
the time because it was a big culture shock. But

128
00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:18.480
what I learned and what I expressed to my mom

129
00:07:18.600 --> 00:07:20.680
later on, because she was the one who was adamant

130
00:07:20.680 --> 00:07:24.160
about us moving, it was one of the best things

131
00:07:24.160 --> 00:07:26.199
that could have happened to me because it opened up

132
00:07:26.279 --> 00:07:30.360
my world and the resilience that I got from being

133
00:07:30.439 --> 00:07:33.519
in that space and seeing it through with the support

134
00:07:33.600 --> 00:07:35.839
of my friends who I made connections with their and

135
00:07:35.920 --> 00:07:37.000
my family.

136
00:07:37.480 --> 00:07:38.879
Helped me later on.

137
00:07:39.079 --> 00:07:41.439
Is other things came through and were hard and I

138
00:07:41.439 --> 00:07:44.360
could say, well, this was really hard and I made

139
00:07:44.360 --> 00:07:46.439
it through, and I can go through the next thing,

140
00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:49.399
and it's not as hard and it doesn't seem as difficult.

141
00:07:49.720 --> 00:07:51.240
And I can feel that.

142
00:07:51.759 --> 00:07:54.920
When people and I mostly work, like I said, with students,

143
00:07:54.959 --> 00:07:57.279
so when I can, I can feel that when they

144
00:07:57.319 --> 00:08:01.240
see that, when they have that chance to go through

145
00:08:01.279 --> 00:08:04.560
something really hard and then come out on the other

146
00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:07.879
side with the encouragement of the adults around them and everything,

147
00:08:07.959 --> 00:08:12.000
but they really feel that confidence in themselves. And that's

148
00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:15.639
one of the things that I hope that kids get

149
00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:17.560
as they read the book, but as they go through life,

150
00:08:17.560 --> 00:08:21.439
because I feel like we have built them bubbles around

151
00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:24.839
them and they don't get the opportunity to experience these

152
00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:27.079
things and to build that confidence and to get a

153
00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:30.759
little tougher. So maybe reading about it would help them

154
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:35.240
to understand that it's possible. But I had that journey.

155
00:08:35.399 --> 00:08:39.320
I've had lots of transitions in my life. Like I said,

156
00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:43.120
life happened a lot for me going through the ages,

157
00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:47.519
but having those experiences built in at a very young

158
00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:50.960
age really helped me to deal with the bigger things

159
00:08:50.960 --> 00:08:53.600
as they came along. So knowing that things are going

160
00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:56.840
to be hard, but that might be just a season

161
00:08:57.440 --> 00:08:59.159
and I can get through that and move on to

162
00:08:59.200 --> 00:08:59.799
the next thing.

163
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:06.080
As especially kids, you know, there's so much that goes

164
00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:11.679
on in their brains that are so far beyond Do

165
00:09:11.720 --> 00:09:15.480
you remember the cartoon The Family Circle, Yes, that has

166
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:20.600
you know, pin paper, where here's little PJ sitting against

167
00:09:20.600 --> 00:09:23.720
the tree and his thought bubbles are I'm gonna have

168
00:09:23.799 --> 00:09:25.240
to go to school, So how am I going to

169
00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:28.080
learn how to make my bed? All of these different things?

170
00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:31.159
And mom and Dad are looking at him out the window, going, oh,

171
00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:34.679
to be young and not have a Carrien, Yes. And

172
00:09:34.799 --> 00:09:38.600
it's so funny because we as adults, I think, often

173
00:09:38.759 --> 00:09:44.919
forget what it was like being a teenager, what it's

174
00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:49.039
like being that tween age where you want to do

175
00:09:49.080 --> 00:09:50.840
all these things and you're not old enough to do

176
00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:52.919
them and your parents won't let you, but you really

177
00:09:52.919 --> 00:09:56.879
want to try, and and so there's just all that

178
00:09:57.840 --> 00:10:02.440
angst that goes on. And again, each one of these

179
00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:06.559
characters has their own transitions that they are going through

180
00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:11.519
that people don't know about. And Riley that you know

181
00:10:11.639 --> 00:10:14.320
at the end where you're finding out that you know

182
00:10:14.360 --> 00:10:17.919
and you wonder why what makes kids do the things

183
00:10:17.919 --> 00:10:19.960
that they do? And is it a cry for help?

184
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:21.080
Is it? You know?

185
00:10:21.159 --> 00:10:24.759
All of these different things that you just don't know.

186
00:10:25.240 --> 00:10:26.879
And I like at the end of the book, how

187
00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:32.200
you have book club questions kind of fostering using this

188
00:10:32.919 --> 00:10:35.799
whether you're using it in school or a parent reads

189
00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:38.559
it first gives it to their kids to spark conversation.

190
00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:42.519
What made you add those kind of questions?

191
00:10:42.679 --> 00:10:46.360
Just from what you said, like, I know that a

192
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:49.720
lot of times we as adults forget what it was like.

193
00:10:49.799 --> 00:10:51.919
And if you don't interact with kids on a regular

194
00:10:51.960 --> 00:10:55.799
basis other than your own, possibly you don't know the

195
00:10:55.840 --> 00:10:57.840
things that are going on in their heads. So I

196
00:10:57.919 --> 00:11:00.279
just hope that if I put the question and it

197
00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:05.919
would give teachers, caregivers, whomever a chance to spark conversation

198
00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:08.519
with the kids and hear what they're thinking about, hear

199
00:11:08.519 --> 00:11:11.039
about the things in their lives that are touching them

200
00:11:11.080 --> 00:11:15.240
and affecting them, and for the caregiver or teacher to

201
00:11:15.360 --> 00:11:21.440
offer some solace, some support, something to say I hear you,

202
00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:24.080
because that's all people want is to be hurt and

203
00:11:24.120 --> 00:11:27.480
to know that what they are thinking and feeling matters,

204
00:11:27.960 --> 00:11:29.399
even little people.

205
00:11:30.279 --> 00:11:33.000
You know, what their feelings matter. I remember my son

206
00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:35.919
asking you on time, you know, when does my opinion count?

207
00:11:35.960 --> 00:11:38.679
In this family, I said, when you pay rent, I said,

208
00:11:38.679 --> 00:11:40.559
other than that, you're along for the ride. I said,

209
00:11:40.679 --> 00:11:44.799
understand something. I hear what you're saying, and I respect

210
00:11:45.320 --> 00:11:49.799
your feelings and your opinion, but ultimately, you are the child.

211
00:11:50.039 --> 00:11:52.840
I am the parent, and I have to make the

212
00:11:52.840 --> 00:12:00.120
final decision. And someday you are going to understand. Right now, now,

213
00:12:00.279 --> 00:12:03.440
you think I'm being unfair, you think I'm not taking

214
00:12:03.480 --> 00:12:07.360
your feelings, I'm not respecting you and everything else. But

215
00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:11.360
someday this conversation is going to come back to you

216
00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:14.200
and you're going to understand why I did this. So

217
00:12:14.279 --> 00:12:17.799
guess what for that day? Then I say this now?

218
00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:20.759
And it was funny. My son was twenty four and

219
00:12:20.799 --> 00:12:24.039
he called me up and said, Mom, remember that time

220
00:12:24.080 --> 00:12:26.000
you said that you were saying things and I wouldn't

221
00:12:26.039 --> 00:12:28.799
understand it, but someday I would. And for that day,

222
00:12:28.840 --> 00:12:31.240
then you're saying it now. Guess what that day happened?

223
00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:34.919
And so it is.

224
00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:38.120
You know as a parent you are now, and especially

225
00:12:38.159 --> 00:12:44.840
in today's world, because our kids carry around a handheld computer, yes,

226
00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:48.320
that is giving them way more information than they need

227
00:12:48.360 --> 00:12:49.519
to have in their.

228
00:12:49.440 --> 00:12:51.960
Life and more than they can process.

229
00:12:52.320 --> 00:12:57.120
Exactly, you know, and so now our opinions are more

230
00:12:57.159 --> 00:13:02.159
divisive and things like that, and guess what it shouldn't be.

231
00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:07.000
But I tell parents all the time, just don't give up,

232
00:13:07.320 --> 00:13:11.360
Like just think of yourself and your behavior and how

233
00:13:11.519 --> 00:13:12.440
you are doing stuff.

234
00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:14.399
And you hear your parents come out of your mouth

235
00:13:14.440 --> 00:13:16.639
sometimes and they're like, wait, where did that come from?

236
00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:19.519
Like, if you don't give up, believe me, at some

237
00:13:19.639 --> 00:13:21.960
point you're coming out of their mouth, whether they like

238
00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:22.600
it or not.

239
00:13:25.679 --> 00:13:28.679
I'm laughing because on that note, think about it, we

240
00:13:28.840 --> 00:13:31.840
all sound like our mothers sometimes and we.

241
00:13:31.840 --> 00:13:33.600
Were like, how did that happen?

242
00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:37.960
And then you realize, man, you know, my mom really

243
00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:39.399
had some insight.

244
00:13:40.279 --> 00:13:42.559
You know, I was my mom was amazing.

245
00:13:43.240 --> 00:13:46.399
And I was fourteen when I realized my mother never

246
00:13:46.440 --> 00:13:49.639
said no, she goes rather you not do that. And

247
00:13:49.679 --> 00:13:51.919
by the time I was fourteen, when my mother said

248
00:13:52.399 --> 00:13:54.720
I'd rather you not do that, she was right.

249
00:13:55.519 --> 00:13:57.120
She was always right.

250
00:13:57.720 --> 00:14:00.399
And on that note, on your behalf and memory, Mommy,

251
00:14:00.399 --> 00:14:03.399
we're gonna take a quick break, say thank you to

252
00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:05.840
our sponsors, and we'll be back here.

253
00:14:05.720 --> 00:14:08.240
In just a moment. On Word of Mom.

254
00:14:08.120 --> 00:14:12.679
Radio, she is brave, she is bold, she is you

255
00:14:13.080 --> 00:14:16.240
and we want to tell your story. Are you ready

256
00:14:16.279 --> 00:14:19.879

we all win.

260
00:14:29.240 --> 00:14:35.320
In twenty seventeen, Unsilenced Voices was formed to help survivors

261
00:14:35.320 --> 00:14:40.759
of domestic abuse and gender based violence worldwide. The organization

262
00:14:41.080 --> 00:14:46.679
currently serves Siri Leone, Rwanda, Ghana, and the USA. In

263
00:14:46.759 --> 00:14:51.360
twenty twenty two, Unsilenced Voices gifted over thirty three thousand

264
00:14:51.399 --> 00:14:55.080
dollars to survivors in the USA and in Siri Leone,

265
00:14:55.320 --> 00:14:58.559
there are over twenty six young girls who have been

266
00:14:58.639 --> 00:15:03.120
rescued from sex t and domestic abuse and now going

267
00:15:03.159 --> 00:15:06.919
through vocational training school in order to better their lives.

268
00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:11.519
We need your help. Donations are critical in order for

269
00:15:11.639 --> 00:15:15.720
us to continue our work. We also need volunteers to

270
00:15:15.799 --> 00:15:22.120
help with research and development. Please visit Unsilenced Voices dot

271
00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:23.840
org for more information.

272
00:15:24.200 --> 00:15:26.679
And we are back here on Word of Mom Radio.

273
00:15:26.879 --> 00:15:30.360
I am speaking with Antoinette h Jones about her book

274
00:15:30.759 --> 00:15:40.919
The Independence and just talking about those relationships that especially

275
00:15:40.960 --> 00:15:44.279
as kids. You know, some of those relationships that I have.

276
00:15:44.559 --> 00:15:47.679
I'm actually right now recording in the home of my

277
00:15:47.799 --> 00:15:51.080
childhood friend. I'm up here for the weekend visiting with her.

278
00:15:51.200 --> 00:15:54.519
We've been friends since we were eleven and thirteen. Oh,

279
00:15:54.759 --> 00:15:57.559
that's something that we're not quite sure, but you know,

280
00:15:57.559 --> 00:16:01.240
we're going on almost fifty years of a French Yeah.

281
00:16:01.320 --> 00:16:03.799
It's things like that. You know, some of those people

282
00:16:03.840 --> 00:16:07.480
that you meet in your early life that are with

283
00:16:07.600 --> 00:16:10.519
you forever. My webmaster Linda Cherry. You guys have heard

284
00:16:10.519 --> 00:16:13.600
about Lynda Jill. I've known Linda was the little sister

285
00:16:13.720 --> 00:16:21.279
my little brother always wanted. So I've known since she's thirteen. Actually,

286
00:16:21.320 --> 00:16:25.600
her son, my godson, turned twenty one the other day. Yeah,

287
00:16:25.639 --> 00:16:29.799
So you know, it's amazing how these friendships as a

288
00:16:29.919 --> 00:16:34.559
child and as kids can move on. And that's the

289
00:16:34.600 --> 00:16:38.639
central theme to me in this book is about friendship

290
00:16:38.759 --> 00:16:43.559
and how friends are foregn and come together. These individual

291
00:16:43.639 --> 00:16:49.639
people the independence thing, were independent people dealing with their

292
00:16:49.639 --> 00:16:53.559
own things who came in in a common goal. How

293
00:16:53.600 --> 00:16:57.320
do you believe that the portrayal of these friendships can

294
00:16:58.279 --> 00:17:02.080
really give that positive insight to those kids reading it.

295
00:17:03.559 --> 00:17:05.440
I hope it's through.

296
00:17:07.960 --> 00:17:12.960
Example, because again, when I worked with students, a lot

297
00:17:12.960 --> 00:17:15.119
of times they have a lot going on in their head,

298
00:17:15.160 --> 00:17:17.920
and like you say, the devices that they have make

299
00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:21.720
them feel like they're connected, but they aren't really connected,

300
00:17:22.359 --> 00:17:27.839
and so they have these conversations on the device that

301
00:17:27.920 --> 00:17:31.279
don't translate into real life. Like they have trouble with

302
00:17:31.519 --> 00:17:33.759
speaking to each other. They have trouble with knowing how

303
00:17:33.799 --> 00:17:36.359
to connect and what to say. So I'm hoping that

304
00:17:36.440 --> 00:17:38.839
the example that they get just from reading the Book

305
00:17:38.880 --> 00:17:41.680
of Seeing how like you said, all these kids have

306
00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:45.119
different lives, they have different backgrounds, they come from different places,

307
00:17:45.519 --> 00:17:48.119
but they can still connect. They still find a way

308
00:17:48.720 --> 00:17:51.319
to be nice to each other, to have a conversation,

309
00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:55.440
to hang out, I mean Roger Bike, like be out

310
00:17:55.440 --> 00:17:56.640
there in the world.

311
00:17:56.400 --> 00:17:57.720
To connect with another person.

312
00:17:57.759 --> 00:18:00.799
So I'm hoping the example of Seeing It will help

313
00:18:00.839 --> 00:18:03.799
other kids figure out how to make it happen in

314
00:18:03.839 --> 00:18:04.599
their real life.

315
00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:07.200
I love that you said that about ride your bike,

316
00:18:07.319 --> 00:18:11.200
because again, in today's world, I'll never forget being out

317
00:18:11.240 --> 00:18:14.640
walking and these kids are riding their bike and the

318
00:18:14.680 --> 00:18:15.960
police came up behind them.

319
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:18.160
You're not supposed to be riding your bike. I walked over.

320
00:18:18.200 --> 00:18:20.960
I said, excuse me, the officer, Yeah, why would you

321
00:18:21.000 --> 00:18:23.799
have a problem that these kids are riding their bikes

322
00:18:24.119 --> 00:18:27.480
on the sidewalk or on the side street in the park.

323
00:18:27.559 --> 00:18:29.960
What is your problem? Did you forget what it is

324
00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:32.359
on a really nice day, it's been raining for a week.

325
00:18:32.559 --> 00:18:35.559
I'm sitting here. These kids have done nothing, They've caused

326
00:18:35.599 --> 00:18:39.200
no problem. What is your problem? Where do you expect

327
00:18:39.200 --> 00:18:39.640
them to go?

328
00:18:40.119 --> 00:18:43.039
We live in such a different world.

329
00:18:43.079 --> 00:18:45.720
When I was a kid in the summertime, man, you

330
00:18:45.880 --> 00:18:48.079
ate breakfast, you shoved a sandwich in your pocket, and

331
00:18:48.119 --> 00:18:52.279
you came home on the street you wanted to call somebody,

332
00:18:52.440 --> 00:18:54.240
yelled their name loud enough so the kid on the

333
00:18:54.279 --> 00:18:57.440
next block and then let them know you would try

334
00:18:57.519 --> 00:18:58.319
to find them.

335
00:18:58.680 --> 00:19:01.599
And that bike was a your first that it's a freedom,

336
00:19:01.759 --> 00:19:03.640
like you got on that bike and you got to.

337
00:19:03.680 --> 00:19:09.880
Do yeah, exactly exactly. So it's such a different world

338
00:19:09.920 --> 00:19:12.000
that our kids live in. And it's interesting, you know,

339
00:19:12.079 --> 00:19:14.880
for me, I have two grandkids, both my sons. One

340
00:19:15.160 --> 00:19:18.119
son is a very electronic the other son is very

341
00:19:18.240 --> 00:19:24.039
much nature. So it's a really interesting dichotomy because my grandson,

342
00:19:24.440 --> 00:19:26.119
I mean, forget it, they'll show me how to do

343
00:19:26.240 --> 00:19:28.400
things on my computer, is six. And then there's my

344
00:19:28.480 --> 00:19:31.319
granddaughter who's gonna show me how to hike this trail,

345
00:19:32.039 --> 00:19:36.200
meaning we can make this craft and so they all

346
00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:39.720
everybody's journey is different, just like these kids in the book.

347
00:19:40.480 --> 00:19:43.119
You know that each one of them, regardless of what's

348
00:19:43.160 --> 00:19:45.720
going on at home and their private journeys and things

349
00:19:45.759 --> 00:19:46.839
like that, they're all together.

350
00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:48.880
Mm and they show up for each other.

351
00:19:49.039 --> 00:19:52.640
Yeah, exactly, and and really working together. I'm gonna flip

352
00:19:52.680 --> 00:19:56.160
this because you do have that background in education, was

353
00:19:56.319 --> 00:19:59.559
part of this for you as an educator? Writing this

354
00:19:59.599 --> 00:20:03.799
book a good resource for teachers and students to spark

355
00:20:03.880 --> 00:20:04.880
these conversations.

356
00:20:04.880 --> 00:20:07.119
Angelinette, Yes, I.

357
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:10.359
Mean just when I just felt like there wasn't there

358
00:20:10.400 --> 00:20:13.799
weren't enough people to touch all the kids who needed

359
00:20:13.799 --> 00:20:17.720
to be touched. When you're working with the students, it's

360
00:20:17.759 --> 00:20:20.799
like you sit down with a kid and you ask

361
00:20:20.880 --> 00:20:24.759
them just a small question about what they did in

362
00:20:24.799 --> 00:20:28.240
the summer or something, and they just pour out all

363
00:20:28.440 --> 00:20:32.720
this information looking for connection. And I hope that if

364
00:20:32.759 --> 00:20:34.880
I can offer it as a book, it can reach

365
00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:38.839
more classrooms, more teachers, like have a book club with

366
00:20:38.920 --> 00:20:42.200
the students and have these conversations that they can even

367
00:20:42.240 --> 00:20:45.000
take home, like copy the questions and let them take

368
00:20:45.039 --> 00:20:46.799
them home and the parents can ask them about the

369
00:20:46.799 --> 00:20:50.079
book that they're reading and make a connection. Just any

370
00:20:50.119 --> 00:20:53.480
way to help the kids figure out that they can

371
00:20:53.519 --> 00:20:56.920
do hard things. It's okay, you can do hard things,

372
00:20:57.079 --> 00:20:58.319
and you'll be okay.

373
00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:00.960
Not only can you do hard things, but you can

374
00:21:01.039 --> 00:21:08.359
work together to learn to solve a problem. To create

375
00:21:08.400 --> 00:21:14.400
those connections. I mean, it's part of what I really enjoyed.

376
00:21:15.480 --> 00:21:17.519
You know, you came up with what idea and how

377
00:21:17.599 --> 00:21:20.440
they were able to just kind of move forward and

378
00:21:20.920 --> 00:21:23.440
help out avery and all of these different things.

379
00:21:23.480 --> 00:21:25.640
Because again, learning how.

380
00:21:25.480 --> 00:21:29.440
To work together, learning how to find a common goal

381
00:21:30.519 --> 00:21:35.200
and make that happen, I think works in so many

382
00:21:35.200 --> 00:21:38.519
different ways. Problem solving is a huge thing, and I

383
00:21:38.559 --> 00:21:41.799
mean our kids do it from the time they're you know, toddlers,

384
00:21:42.279 --> 00:21:46.279
they're already problem solving, you know, but when they realize

385
00:21:46.279 --> 00:21:48.599
that they're working together to do it, I think it

386
00:21:48.799 --> 00:21:53.160
fosters of a sense of independence and purpose and and

387
00:21:53.359 --> 00:21:57.960
just making them realize that I have got this and

388
00:21:58.000 --> 00:22:01.359
I'm not alone, that I've got friends I can rely on.

389
00:22:01.839 --> 00:22:05.079
Right, and we're different, but we can still work together.

390
00:22:05.200 --> 00:22:07.920
That's a great way to end this conversation. What do

391
00:22:07.960 --> 00:22:11.680
you want to leave our listeners with, Antoinette and how

392
00:22:11.680 --> 00:22:12.880
may they reach out to you?

393
00:22:13.279 --> 00:22:16.240
I want to leave them with the knowledge that they

394
00:22:16.279 --> 00:22:21.240
are not alone. Everybody, anybody who's listening, everybody who reads

395
00:22:21.240 --> 00:22:25.079
the book. There is connection out there. There are people

396
00:22:25.079 --> 00:22:30.200
who understand, there are people who are having similar experiences,

397
00:22:30.240 --> 00:22:34.079
and we all can support each other no matter where

398
00:22:34.119 --> 00:22:37.240
we come from, what our backgrounds are like, or what

399
00:22:37.359 --> 00:22:40.319
our experiences have been thus far, we can find common

400
00:22:40.319 --> 00:22:41.839
ground and support each other.

401
00:22:42.240 --> 00:22:44.079
How may they reach out to you, Antoinette?

402
00:22:44.519 --> 00:22:47.960
Everybody can just go to my website Antoinette Hjones dot

403
00:22:47.960 --> 00:22:51.160

404

410
00:23:08.480 --> 00:23:11.200
it's a good read, and it's something you could enjoy

411
00:23:11.319 --> 00:23:14.880
together again. I like the questions at the end. I

412
00:23:14.880 --> 00:23:19.039
think it's important that we have these conversations with our kids,

413
00:23:19.759 --> 00:23:23.839
and it's a great way to take that and kind

414
00:23:23.839 --> 00:23:26.240
of translate it into all the different things that they're doing,

415
00:23:27.039 --> 00:23:32.480
because conversing with your kids is really important, really, So

416

Antoinette H. Jones Profile Photo

I am a writer driven by a sincere desire to connect with young people through storytelling. After more than a decade in education, I made the difficult decision to become a children’s author at the age of 49. It has changed my perspective.
Becoming an author at this stage in my life has opened my mind to new possibilities and offered me the opportunity to inspire others. It is important to me to share life's possibilities with others - especially children.
Drawing from my personal story and interactions, I wrote the book, The Independents. As I'd hoped, the story has resonated deeply with its audience, offering connection, laughter, and thought-provoking insights into the human experience.
Through my writing and life experiences, I hope to inspire and uplift young hearts, reminding them that they are never alone in their journey. My journey as a storyteller is one of resilience, transition, and unwavering dedication to the transformative power of literature.
